HARMONY AND PEACE

Perhaps one's first association of the word harmony was with music, where, among other definitions, it is termed "an agreeable blending of tones." Notice the essential adjective "agreeable." To be harmonious, music must of necessity be composed of pleasing and concordant parts, and only those. This definition points to spiritual harmony.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has much to say regarding harmony in her writings. In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," for instance, shewrites as follows (p. 427): "Nothing can interfere with the harmony of being nor end the existence of man in Science."

What is this harmony of being? Mrs. Eddy tells us (ibid., p. 503): "The divine Principle and idea constitute spiritual harmony,—heaven and eternity. In the universe of Truth, matter is unknown. No supposition of error enters there." Christian Science teaches that God is Life and that man is His idea. Because God is also infinite Love, supreme Mind, divine Principle, and omnipotent Truth, each one of His ideas—each one of us in his true being—reflects the spiritual qualities of intelligence, wisdom, integrity, happiness, and love. Harmony of being is a perfect reflection of Godlike qualities. As we daily prove our understanding of these truths, we become more capable homemakers and family providers and wiser contributors to world prosperity and peace.
