THE RULE ALWAYS WORKS

In the study of Christian Science we find that there are certain definite rules for us to follow which, when used, bring right results. Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 149), "The rule and its perfection of operation never vary in Science." From this statement it is seen that as Christian Science is followed, correct results can be expected as surely as when a mathematical law is put into operation. The logical step, then, is to learn to understand and apply the rules of Christian Science.

In this passage from "Christian Science versus Pantheism" Mrs. Eddy gives us four Scriptural rules used in the demonstration of Science (p. 9): "Is there a religion under the sun that hath demonstrated one God and the four first rules pertaining thereto, namely, 'Thou shalt have no other gods before me;' 'Love thy neighbor as thyself;' 'Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect;' 'Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.'" These rules, like those of mathematics, never vary, can be used throughout all time, and are the same in all parts of the universe.

Whenever they have been faithfully applied, they have brought sure results. For example, in the degree that the Israelites obeyed the rule, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (Ex. 20:3), they prospered and gave many individual proofs of God's healing and saving power. Jesus, at the beginning of his healing ministry, proved for himself the efficacy of this Commandment in meeting the temptations in his wilderness experience. In all his healing works he recognized and acknowledged God as the only controlling power, and this recognition brought quick and positive results.
