"CERTAIN GREEKS"

(John 12:20)

To think, it was but seven days ago
He talked with us. These have been days and nights
Of pain and death, of fearful doubt and woe—
But lately joy, for he is risen now!

We who are Greeks, mere humble proselytes,
Once pagan children of a pagan land,
Before the one true God had come to bow.
We asked to meet the Master face to face.
He seemed to see within our little band
The multitudes who through the years would seek
To stand beside him in God's holy place.

And then he prayed. There came a heavenly voice!
It seemed as if we heard an angel speak.

The Master said, if we will follow him,
And drink his cup, and then can still rejoice,
If we will teach, and heal, and do the right,
The way will not again be dark or dim,
And we shall dwell forever in the light.
