I became acquainted with Christian Science...

I became acquainted with Christian Science about twelve years ago, but I drifted away from it, for at that time, as in the parable of the sower, the seed had fallen among thorns, which choked it. Three years later, however, when evil seemed to pursue me and great mental suffering engulfed me in the darkness of despair, I again felt a desire to turn to Christian Science and to study it. I followed this leading as one who seeks help from something outside human aid. After a while I was able to confirm these words of Jesus (Matt. 5:6): "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." I sought the truth diligently, trying to understand God and to draw nearer to Him, and God in His infinite mercy satisfied my thirst.

A short time after I had begun to study the teachings of Christian Science, I had an outstanding demonstration of the power of divine Love, which served to ground me in the fundamentals of this Science. My mother suffered a stroke, with congestion of the lungs. Inasmuch as the other members of my family had not accepted Christian Science, they immediately called a physician, who diagnosed the case as very serious. I promptly got in touch with a practitioner, who worked lovingly and patiently and showed me how to think.

My mother remained asleep for several days, apparently unconscious, and did not speak. But, upon the advice of the practitioner, at moments when I was left alone with my mother I would speak softly into her ear and have her repeat the words, "God is my life." These were the first words which she began to say, and although she would not say anything else, she would nevertheless repeat with me "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, p. 468) and the Lord's Prayer. These statements awakened her from the sleep into which she had sunk, and in spite of the fact that the physicians after a consultation declared her beyond recovery, I relied on God and Christian Science. Aided by the practitioner. I continued to uphold the truth of being, knowing that only God, Truth, could save my mother—which proved to be the case.

The physicians said that even though my mother recovered, her mouth would remain distorted. We denied this erroneous suggestion, knowing that man is an idea of God, perfect and harmonious. Everything returned to normal, leaving my mother perfectly well. Today all who see her tell her she looks younger every day, thus confirming the fact that Life is God, eternal and unchangeable.

In addition to this experience I have had many other problems and illnesses, but all were resolved in the light of the teachings of Christian Science, where our only physician and judge is God, infinite divine Love.

Day by day these experiences have been strengthening my faith and spiritual understanding. But that for which I thank God most is the spiritual awakening which has been taking place within me and the fact that with His help and divine aid I have been able to rise above the mental distress which, humanly considered, seemed impossible for me to overcome.

I give unbounded thanks to God for all His blessings, for having guided me into this pathway of light and truth, and for having opened to me the gates of a new life, wherein harmony and true happiness reign. I am also grateful to God and to Christian Science because my young children are receiving the light in the Sunday School, where they have learned that their true Father-Mother is God. I consider myself fortunate to be able to express my gratitude by working actively as a member of a Christian Science Society, a branch of The Mother Church, and I am thankful for membership in The Mother Church, which unites me to the Cause of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, for the welfare of humanity.—(Mrs.) Dora R. de Ruggiero, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
