A fundamental to the practice of Science: discernment of the spiritual fact

THE VITAL IMPORTANCE OF THE SPIRITUAL FACT

In the Glossary to the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, defines "Elias" as follows (p. 585): "Prophecy; spiritual evidence opposed to material sense; Christian Science, with which can be discerned the spiritual fact of whatever the material senses behold; the basis of immortality. 'Elias truly shall first come and restore all things.' (Matthew xvii. 11.)"

A dictionary defines "prophecy" in part as "inspired declaration or revelation of the divine will."

As we study the foregoing definitions, we realize that Christian Science is the "inspired declaration or revelation of the divine will" which enables us to "restore all things" by the discernment of the spiritual facts that material beliefs counterfeit. It makes no difference whether these false beliefs claim to be mental, moral, or physical— transmitted, inherited, imposed, or acquired.
