OUR PRESENT ABILITIES

Human beings have spiritual sense, the ability to understand God, and it is the presence of spiritual sense in human consciousness that enables mankind to express divine power. Christ Jesus taught his followers to wield the authority over evil that belongs to the consciousness imbued with good, and expected them to exceed his works. He said (John 14:12), "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because  I go unto my Father." Christian Science teaches that to believe on him is to demonstrate the Christ, the divine manhood which he embodied and expressed in tender and in mighty proofs of God's love.

It is spiritual sense that relates the human consciousness to the divine and gives it access to the limitless resources of good that man reflects as God's image. It is to spiritual sense that Christ appears, revealing to individuals Love's allness and the temporal, false nature of matter and the carnal mind, teaching them to separate between the spiritual and the material, and enabling them to prove that good alone is real.

It is through this Soul-derived sense, ever present in some degree in human consciousness, that divinity reaches humanity and unfolds the way of salvation from error. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 160), "To live so as to keep human consciousness in constant relation with the divine, the spiritual, and the eternal, is to individualize infinite power; and this is Christian Science."
