The "one way to heaven"

The operations of so-called mortal mind—the mind of mortals—are laid bare in Christian Science, as by no other system; and the disclosure is of immense value to the advancing student of this Science. It shows him, among other things, that what he had regarded as material substance is only this mind objectified, and he perceives as a result the truly scientific method of dealing with material conditions.

In the earlier stages of his work in Christian Science, the value of this understanding may be illustrated to the student most impressively in his experience with his material body, as it appears to be. This body, being matter, is but the externalization of mortal thought. What to do about it, therefore, when it is troubled in any manner, becomes very clear to him. Formerly he believed, like the majority of mankind, that it had to be dealt with materially—by material medicine, hygiene, and the like. But Christian Science shows him that as a false concept it can be truly helped only by spiritual means. To heal his body, therefore, he turns to God for the true sense of being. He seeks to realize more fully the nature of infinite Spirit, Mind, Life, and Love, and his own nature as the expression of God; and proportionally as he succeeds in doing this, his body is improved. In this manner, Christian Scientists have healed all sorts of diseases for themselves and others, including many termed incurable.

If it is asked why material remedies sometimes seem to help the body, the answer is that such phenomena only illustrate further the action of the human mind. As Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has made clear, it is not the medicine, but faith in it, which produces the result in such instances. The patient's confidence in the drug alleviates his fear, thus changing his thought of himself, and the body responds accordingly. But Christian Science continually demonstrates the superiority of spiritual understanding over such faith as a remedial agent.
