Among the memories of my boyhood is that of a small black book, the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, from which my mother read frequently. It had been called to her attention by a woman who came to live with us for several years. Some years before that time, this woman had been healed of a severe case of internal cancer.
It was many years later that I took up the study of Christian Science, and then not for physical healing, but because of a sincere desire to learn more about God. For a number of years it was my privilege to teach a large Sunday school class in an orthodox church of which I had been a member since boyhood. From this experience came the conviction that one's religion should be applicable to every problem of life. It was at this point that I turned to Science and Health. Its first chapter, on Prayer, answered questions which I had asking for years. For the first time in my life I began to understand the nature of true prayer. Since that time I have prayed not only far more than ever before, but, I feel, with much greater intelligence and understanding; and I have had innumerable proofs that such prayers are always answered.
Soon after I commenced my study, my small son was taken ill while we were on vacation in a western state. When I discovered the condition, he apparently had a very high temperature. I brought him into the house and insisted that he lie down, which he did unwillingly. At the time I knew very little of Christian Science, practically nothing of its method of healing, and had no idea that I should be able to apply it to this case. I remember, however, that this thought came to me clearly: This little boy seems to be suffering severely. You can understand how suffering can come as the result of sin; but this little fellow has done nothing wrong. Can you believe that God would display less intelligence and justice than a human father, and permit suffering where there had been no wrongdoing? I soon noticed that my son was no longer crying and had fallen asleep. Within a very few minutes he awoke and, to my astonishment and joy, was completely healed. I knew then that I was confronted with a power about which I must learn more.
