Science and Art
In speaking of God as infinite Mind, Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 507), "This divine Principle of all expresses Science and art throughout His creation, and the immortality of man and the universe."
Since God is the great Artist expressing beauty of form and color in all creation, man, the image and likeness of Mind, must be the full epitome of His art. In all things man shows forth the artistry of living and of loving. In absolute understanding and in perfection of beauty, God's ideas eternally express Him. Were it otherwise, were He not in evidence in art as well as in Science, there would be some measure of incompleteness—His creation would lack something of Himself.
"He that seeth me seeth him that sent me," said Jesus. Thus is the Father fully represented in the Son. It is not difficult to recognize not only the Science of spiritual knowing expressed in Jesus' words and actions, but the art of living as expressed in the beauty and graciousness of his attitude to mankind. In his dignity and compassion, in his patience and loving-kindness, he showed how it is possible to walk dynamically, and yet withal in perfect judgment and control, in unfailing apprehension of all human needs among his fellow men, their companion and yet also their Lord and Master. In his association with them he showed that he understood both the Science and the art of salvation. "Help me to need no help from men that I may help such men as need," wrote Rudyard Kipling. He who prays thus in spiritual sincerity has already dedicated his life to the greatest of all purposes, the laying down of his material sense of companionship and support, of self-indulgence and reward, that he may be the friend and benefactor of all mankind.
