"Voices Not Our Own"

[Original article in German]

THE harmony of beautiful voices blending together gives delight to many, and indeed such performances are usually intended to uplift and refresh the listener. Those who possess a mature understanding of music are able to give a correct estimate of such a performance, while one who lacks this understanding will only partially appreciate it.

Thus, even as a cultivated ear is needed in order to listen intelligently to music, so our hearing must be attuned spiritually to discern the divine voice, unfamiliar to mortal man. This attunement takes place only when the material senses are silenced and spiritual sense holds sway. Egotism and self-will must give place to humility and the recognition of that spiritual selfhood which expresses God.

One may ask. How can I recognize the voice of divine revelation? Christian Science answers this question. It declares that there is only one voice, the voice of God, and that its utterances are in accord with the law of the highest good, with the law of perfection. This divine voice needs no intermediary, but communicates with man directly. Mary Baker Eddy says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 308), "The Soulinspired patriarchs heard the voice of Truth, and talked with God as consciously as man talks with man."
