Early in 1934, after a consultation of many doctors, it was decided to give me a month's special treatment in a hospital for colitis, from which I had suffered for several years. Since the treatment did not have the anticipated medical results, it was then decided to try surgical treatment. I made arrangements, however, to go to Europe, preferring to be operated on there instead of in the Far East, where I had resided for fourteen years.

I had a month's further treatment by specialists in stomach disorders at a well-known European hospital. The doctors there decided that no operation was necessary, but that I should have medical treatment and adhere permanently to a very strict diet, and use daily considerable quantities of certain medicines. Then I proceeded to London and consulted a stomach specialist, who confirmed both the diet and the medical prescriptions.

Upon my return to my home in London from the visit to the specialist, a letter from a friend in Shanghai awaited me. My friend, having heard of my departure from the East, wrote that I might like to try Christian Science. In a few words he mentioned how this Science had helped him. He enclosed the list, taken from The Christian Science Journal, of all the Christian Science practitioners in England.
