Among the Churches

Rutherford, New Jersey (First Church). — Morning, afternoon, and evening dedication services of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Rutherford, located at Lincoln and Pierrepont Avenues, were held on Sunday, October 20, 1940. A historical sketch of the church was contained in a paper which was read at the services. Following is the content of the paper (in part) :

"In 1906, Christian Science Society, Rutherford, was organized, which, in turn, developed the following year into First Church of Christ, Scientist, Rutherford.

"It became increasingly obvious that we should have our own church building. Early in 1909, ground was purchased at Park and Newell Avenues. Upon this plot our church edifice was built in 1912, and was dedicated in 1920. Services were held there for sixteen years, but the steady growth of Christian Science in this community made it apparent that larger accommodations were again necessary. New property was obtained at the corner of Lincoln and Pierrepont Avenues, where our present building was erected, which has been in use since 1929.

"During these past eleven years the mortgage has been steadily reduced, and now the church is completely free from debt, thus permitting its dedication." — Rutherford Republican.
