The Spiritual Seer

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE has revealed to humanity the eternal consciousness of good; the present availability of the Christ to heal and redeem; the kingdom of heaven, not afar off but at hand. With this true interpretation of prophecy, the literal as well as the spiritual meaning of which is to speak forth and is not connected with the prediction of future events, mankind, no longer anxiously anticipating precarious good or fearfully apprehensive of possible evil, is assured of the continuous fulfillment of the divine purpose.

On page 593 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy thus defines the word "prophet": "A spiritual seer; disappearance of material sense before the conscious facts of spiritual Truth." He who lifts his eyes to see the universe and man as created by Spirit, and refuses to accept as real and therefore powerful the testimony of material sense, will follow in the footsteps of Christ Jesus; in the way of resurrection and ascension.

To those assembled in the synagogue at Nazareth, the Master said, "This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears." The seers of the Old Testament had seen a far-off immunity from ill, a future Saviour; they had predicted good while accepting a present incompleteness and imperfection. They had looked to events rather than to the clarity of their own spiritual vision, the consecration of their individual lives, for final deliverance. Jesus, being a spiritual seer, knew that there was nothing to prophesy but the fact of the eternal oneness of God and man. The glory which had always been his, his birthright of dominion and of perfection, were what he preached. Not afar off, but here and now! "He that seeth me," he declared, "seeth him that sent me."
