The basic fact of existence is that there is but one...
The basic fact of existence is that there is but one supreme, infinite God, good, the only creator and ruler of the universe. The world today is but seeing in its war-torn condition the inescapable result of the lack of a complete acceptance of this oneness of God. The belief in more than one God, more than one power, inevitably develops the belief of personal power and fosters the strife of determining by material means which particular power is the greater. Thus, just as individuals are led astray through material ambitions, so entire nations fall victims to the same willfulness and arrogantly assume themselves to be the arbiters of justice and qualified governors of other nations and peoples—justifying themselves on the basis of the belief that power is material and "might makes right." But with the acknowledgement of God as the one creator and the further acceptance of Him as Love, selfishness and greed are replaced by unselfishness, and hatred and bestial ferocity by tolerance and a recognition of the universal brotherhood of man. Replacing its falsely cherished tower of material aspirations, with which it vainly hopes to reach heaven, with the concept of the shining temple of the living God, founded upon the rock of Truth, lighting the way to the kingdom of heaven on earth, mankind will emerge from its belief in "gods many" to the acceptance of the great fact that there is but the one God, and begin striving to love Him with all its heart, and with all its soul, and with all its might.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 340), "One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself;' annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry,—whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed." Thus the oneness of God is the imperative message of religion for our day.
