Topic: The Purpose of Education

[Henry Geerlings, in the Evening Sentinel, Holland, Michigan]

The purpose of all education is to raise the standard of citizenship and Christian living. In a democracy we must have a high degree of intelligence, for if the people are to govern themselves they must be intelligent.

Education is for more than the acquisition of knowledge. A person is not necessarily educated when he knows a lot of facts. The purpose of education is to teach a way of life. Education must enlarge one's conception of the meaning of life. It must enable him to put a new interpretation upon life.
