At a time of utter despondency, having reached the limit...
At a time of utter despondency, having reached the limit of human endurance, I searched my Bible for help and comfort. After a while, I turned wholeheartedly to God in prayer, asking that I might know the peace promised to those who seek Him. For years I had suffered from a severe form of heart disease. A cyst, for which an operation had been suggested by a medical attendant, and a serious kidney trouble, for which I had to wear a surgical belt, added to my discomfort. It had often been necessary for me to remain in bed for weeks at a time.
At the period of which I write, when I was seriously ill, a friend, who was returning from a visit to England, came to stay with me for a short time. During her visit she produced a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which she said had been given to her by some friends in England as a parting gift. She told me that all she had read of it was beautiful and encouraging, and she added that if I cared to read it, it would help me. She spoke of meetings to which her friends had taken her, and where she had heard many people give testimony to the fact that they had been healed of serious diseases, including, in some cases, those deemed incurable. Often these healings had resulted simply from the reading of Science and Health.
That evening I began to read the book, and before I had read very far I knew that it contained the truth. It took me some years to overcome the heart and kidney troubles; however, I learned that to be transformed outwardly a great change had to take place inwardly, and I was constantly encouraged by improved conditions, and the complete healing finally came.
