As a child I attended an orthodox Sunday school and became familiar with the recorded teachings and works of our Master, Christ Jesus. It seemed only natural to me that people who professed to be Christians should apply what they learned from their study of the Bible. However, through many disillusioning incidents, I found that people generally did not really believe Jesus' teachings to be applicable to present-day problems. Gradually I lost interest in the church and tried to convince myself that there was no God.

Through this period of disillusionment I suffered much, and experienced one nervous breakdown after another. Receiving no benefit from medical aid, I tried to fill my life with beauty and adventure, studying music, art, dancing, anything and everything that would fill my thought and temporarily serve to distract it from suffering. But, although I enjoyed my studies and am grateful for having pursued them, I found no help from them physically. I grew worse, and realized I should, sooner or later, have to face the fact that God, once understood, supplies all our needs.

For five years both my father and my mother had been studying and applying Christian Science according to their understanding; but, although they lovingly tried to present it to me in their great desire to help, I scorned it.
