Bible Notes

[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in this column can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons.]

"Let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth" (I John 3:18)—Goodspeed suggests the rendering: "Let us love not with words or lips only but in reality and truth;" while The Twentieth Century New Testament has: "Do not let our love be mere words, or end in talk; let it be true and show itself in acts."

"His love is perfected in us" (I John 4:12)—The Greek verb which is here rendered "be perfected," can also mean "be completed, accomplished, consummated." Moffatt renders: "Love for him is complete in us;" while Goodspeed prefers this translation: "Love for him attains perfection in our hearts."

"For his mercy endureth for ever" (Ps. 106:1)—The Hebrew term "chesed" has a wider, deeper meaning than can be represented by any single English word such as "mercy." In our familiar Authorized Version it is sometimes rendered "goodness" (Hos. 6:4) or "lovingkindness" (Hos. 2:19), and it signifies kindliness, tenderness, love, and loyalty. Thus Moffatt sometimes renders it "love" (as in Hos. 6:6), but in Psalms 106:1 he has, "His kindness never fails."
