Higher Learning

The educational systems of today embrace many steps which lead to what is termed "higher learning," an expression which refers generally to knowledge gained about facts that are considered necessary to enable men to conduct their daily affairs.

The student of Christian Science, however, has discovered that there is a step beyond the highest peak of material learning. It is the understanding of spiritual truths, which he has learned to recognize as the only real facts of existence. For him there is thus a higher level of learning based upon the understanding that things are thoughts over which he may gain complete dominion as he exchanges material beliefs for spiritual ideas.

The Principle of this teaching was presented to the world by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, over seventy years ago, and is concisely stated in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," in the words (p. 123): "Divine Science, rising above physical theories, excludes matter, resolves things into thoughts, and replaces the objects of material sense with spiritual ideas." The verity of this statement came as a dis covery to Mrs. Eddy. By lifting her thought to the contemplation of spiritual things, and thus displacing thoughts of death, she was instantaneously healed of a physical injury that had been believed to be fatal.
