The Might of Meekness

When Christ Jesus included in his comprehensive Sermon on the Mount those encouraging words, "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth," he set forth the irresistible might of Spirit which accompanies true meekness.

Might is a word used frequently these days. Sometimes the carnal mind's suggestion of physical force in connection with might would seem to stir up fear and apprehension among those who are longing for peace and good will to be established between men and nations. But to those who have seen, though as yet in but small measure, the power of God revealed through the teachings of Christian Science, there is growing an ever-increasing certainty of the reality and presence of but one might or power—that of Spirit.

Undoubtedly the Master realized the great need to express Christly meekness in all our human affairs. With compassionate encouragement he blessed all who were endeavoring, through humble receptivity to the demands of Truth and Love, to prove man's natural dominion and freedom. And with what tender persuasion his words invite all who are weary of the trammels and snares of mortal desires, aims, and opinions, to seek and find the way of life he trod so successfully! That material thinking and methods possess no real might is assured by the Master's wondrous promise. Fear is stilled and uncertainty vanquished as we learn that spiritual thinking alone gives might to human endeavor.
