In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says (p. 318): "The material senses originate and support all that is material, untrue, selfish, or debased. They would put soul into soil, life into limbo, and doom all things to decay. We must silence this lie of material sense with the truth of spiritual sense." For an ever-increasing ability to silence the "lie of material sense" I am deeply grateful.
Many years ago a copy of Science and Health was placed in my hands by a friend, who urged me to read it through. I was greatly in need of help at that time, for I had had a cough for six months, and friends were making dire predictions as to my future, reminding me that consumption ran in my family. As I continued reading, however, I glimpsed the truth that this error was not of God, good, and before I had finished the book, the trouble had disappeared, and I was healed. I then began reading the Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly, and learned that it is within our power, through divine Love, to deny erroneous suggestions of sickness and sin.
When problems arise and I am forced to take a firm stand for Truth, I am frequently encouraged by the memory of a proof of God's ever-present help which I experienced. This was the healing of chronic stomach trouble and severe periodic headaches, which used to send me to bed for days at a time every few weeks. I was a slave to cathartics and certain foods. As I grew in the understanding of the rightful heritage of all God's children, I knew that this bondage was not natural to me, so I resolutely denied myself the use of any laxatives, and for nine days I held to the truth and cast out all fear. During this period I experienced no discomfort, ate all my regular meals, and was completely healed. Mrs. Eddy writes (ibid., p. 492): "Science says: All is Mind and Mind's idea. You must fight it out on this line. Matter can afford you no aid."
