The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Kansas City, Missouri (Third Church).

Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Mrs. Myrtle Fairmon, who said:—

In the Bible we are told, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me." For centuries the men and women who have read this passage, with its glorious promise, have yearned for some teaching which would show them how to open the door and find the divine presence.

In the last half of the nineteenth century a woman with a clear consciousness, devout faith, and consecrated life, answered the knock and indeed supped with the Lord. Through this communion, Mary Baker Eddy gave to the world "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," a "key" which unlocks the door of humility, and ushers in the Christ. Hear the knock of the Christ; let it awaken your consciousness to the healing efficacy of Christian Science, God's infinite supply, His permanent peace!

Hamburg, Germany (First Church).

Lecturer: Dr. John M. Tutt; introduced by Miss Elisabeth von Kracht, who said:—

Our Master says in his Sermon on the Mount, "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled."

Perhaps some of you have come here tonight hungering for a better understanding of God and His creation; a fervent desire to become more Christlike, more loving, more capable of doing good; or with a deep longing to be delivered from sickness, sorrow, or lack. All who will can be satisfied.

Probably there has never been a time in human history when the battle between good and evil has seemed to be more intense than it is today. Is it not a very important thing for each of us to help bring this battle to an end, that good may be victorious? Christian Science enables us to conquer error, for Christian Science is uncontaminated by human opinions or doctrines. It is a universal religion for all men and for all times.

The question is often asked, What can I as an individual do that world conditions may become better, that hatred and distrust may be destroyed, and peace be established on earth? The answer is this: Spiritualize your thinking. Manifest that which is good, unselfish, honest, and loving. Then all will be blessed: yourself, your family, friends, profession, nation, and finally the whole world.

Bronxville, New York (First Church).

Lecturer: Miss Lucia C. Coulson; introduced by Edwin M. Loye, who said:—

One of the familiar proverbs given us by Solomon is, "Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it."

Solomon was well qualified to give us this proverb. When he ascended the throne, you will recall the sincere humility of his request to God for an "understanding heart." In the translation from the Hebrew, the word rendered "understanding" also means "hearing."

The wellspring, or source of continual supply of understanding, is the same as it was in Solomon's time, nor can we ever imagine any gift from God changing in the slightest degree. It is universally available—available in unlimited measure. Each one of us here tonight may receive the abundance of its blessings. Our need, in listening to the healing message of Truth, is the humble desire for an "understanding heart."

Canton, Ohio (First Church).

Lecturer: Frank Bell; introduced by Mrs. Frances Hamill Seese, who said:—

Our great Master said, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand." He also said, "The kingdom of God is within you." Christian Science shows us how to attain the kingdom of heaven on earth—health, happiness, and harmony, here and now. It gives us a new concept of God, of the universe, and of ourselves, and the old ways of sin, sickness, and discord disappear. As the light of Truth illumines our consciousness, we begin to see a new heaven and a new earth, and the old way of looking at things passes away.

Haarlem, The Netherlands (Society).

Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Mrs. Catharina M. Blekkink-Bottinga, who said:—

One of the religious Tenets of Christian Science reads (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 497): "We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God's image and likeness."

Christ Jesus told his disciples, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." About sixteen years ago Christian Science was brought to my attention, and it is a great joy to me to be able to say that the understanding of the truth that man is God's image and likeness, hence spiritual, set me free from bondage to an unreal master. I had submitted for years to intense nervousness, with its attendant effects of headaches, insomnia, tiredness, and a very bad temper. After a talk with a friend of mine—a loyal Christian Scientist who told me something of Truth, which Christian Science reveals—I felt newborn. I was free from the headaches and insomnia, and felt joyful and happy. I found that I no longer needed glasses, which I had used for about twelve years. Then I began to study the Bible and Science and Health diligently. I am completely free from the nervousness.

The blessings I received from Christian Science are for everybody. "God is no respecter of persons," as the Bible declares. Everyone who takes up the study of Science becomes aware of the fact that Truth makes free.

Green Bay, Wisconsin (First Church).

Lecturer: Dr. Walton Hubbard; introduced by George A. Seiler, who said:—

Christ Jesus said, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." And again, "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shalol be opened unto you."

Sincere seeking led me to my first Christian Science lecture, and the longing to know God led me to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, wherein she states (Pref., p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessing." I have found rest and peace, healing and blessing, through the study and application of Christian Science. And I know that all who sincerely seek Truth will also find comfort and healing.

Lancaster, California (First Church).

Lecturer: George Channing; introduced by Mrs. Adelaide A. Jewell, who said:—

Christ Jesus said, "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever." On page 55 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, its author states, "This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science."

I am one of those who sought the comfort of divine Science. I had suffered for several years from a physical ailment which physicians were unable to heal, and I was daily sinking deeper into despair. Hence it is with profound gratitude that I say, Christian Science restored me to a happy, useful, and active life.

Hinsdale, Illinois (First Church).

Lecturer: Paul A. Harsch; introduced by Mrs. Caroline M. Cox, who said:—

The prophet Isaiah tells us that the mission of the Christ is "to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord ...; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness."

Isaiah prophesied the coming of the Christ, whose nature was exemplified by our Master. Mary Baker Eddy fully revealed to our age the Science of Christ, which has healed and comforted many. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she writes (p. 98): "Mystery does not enshroud Christ's teachings, and they are not theoretical and fragmentary, but practical and complete; and being practical and complete, they are not deprived of their essential vitahty."

Tonbridge, Kent, England (auspices First Church and Society, Tunbridge Wells).

Lecturer: John Henry Weer; introduced by Mrs. Lena Fairbairn, who said:—

Christian Science has taught me something of the meaning of universal Love. We see it expressed in the life of the great Master, Christ Jesus, who so understood Love that he was able not only to heal the sick, but also to redeem the sinner. We see it manifested, too, in the life of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and Leader of its movement, who spent many years lovingly healing and teaching in the service of mankind. To understand Love, we must learn to love universally, and then we too shall be able to heal by its power.

Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 365), "If the Scientist reaches his patient through divine Love, the healing work will be accomplished at one visit, and the disease will vanish into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine."

Wichita Falls, Texas (First Church).

Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by Mrs. Rose Crowell, who said:—

Many centuries ago, Christ Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 473), "Christ is the ideal Truth, that comes to heal sickness and sin through Christian Science, and attributes all power to God."

This "ideal Truth" came to our home when I was a small child, and healed my mother of tuberculosis. Some nineteen years ago, physicians told my family that I could not live, but through the application of Truth I was completely and permanently healed. It has sustained and comforted us in trials and sorrow, and we have learned that God is able to protect, guide, and provide. The truth will heal you, if you will accept it.

Yokohama, Japan (Society).

Lecturer: Peter V. Ross; introduced by Mrs. Hazel H. Gorham, who said:—

Many of us gathered here this evening can joyously testify to the many benefits we have received through the study of Christian Science. Some are here seeking new light on old problems. None can fail to receive some help.
