I am deeply grateful that in my childhood I had some knowledge of Christian Science. My earliest memories include the strengthening truths expressed in the Christian Science Hymnal. My school days were a continuous proof of Mrs. Eddy's statement in the Preface to Science and Health (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Mumps, measles, chicken pox, colds, influenza, and effects of minor accidents were so quickly healed through the application of Christian Science that I went through grade school, high school, and college with a perfect attendance record.
I am especially grateful for a clear proof of the healing power of right thinking which came at a time when I was taking a series of examinations for my Master's degree in a large university. Confining hours of study were made easy by daily realization of this statement from "Pulpit and Press," by Mrs. Eddy (p. 4): "You have simply to preserve a scientific, positive sense of unity with your divine source, and daily demonstrate this." A time came for testing my application of this statement in an emergency. I was required to take an unexpected examination upon which my degree depended. If I failed, the degree would be withheld for some time. Without previous warning, I was informed that at noon I was to be examined in foreign language which I had not used for several years. There was no time to review vocabulary or difficult verb forms. My first reaction was one of fear and indignation. I had been assured by authorities that no such examination would be required, and I bitterly resented the fact that they had not notified me of their change in policy. Knowing that I must overcome resentment before I could think constructively, I telephoned a practitioner for help in proving that Mind alone is the source of intelligence. Almost before I left the telephone, both the resentment and the fear had completely disappeared. I went confidently to the examination, and passed it with a good grade. This experience was only one of many proofs that "Mind alone possesses all faculties, perception, and comprehension" (Science and Health, p. 488).
A beautiful evidence of God's protection came to me and to my family when we were vacationing in a remote spot in the Rocky Mountains. One night my mother was stricken with a violent attack of poisoning. There was no practitioner in that lonely region, and no telegraph office within miles from which my father and I could wire for help. We declared aloud the harmony of man until dawn, without bringing a visible change to the situation. Leaving my father to care for what seemed a desperate condition, I started for the telegraph office, saying over and over a statement that has sustained thousands the world over: "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (ibid., p. 494). As the realization of the truth of the words grew clearer, the name of practitioner visiting at a near-by ranch, which had been casually mentioned in a desultory conversation, came insistently to my thought, and I was impelled to stop my car and turn in the opposite direction. Her immediate and loving response to our need, and the healing which followed, brought to our family renewed gratitude for the availability of Christian Science. It has given us a solution for every problem over a period of many years.
