In a news story recently appearing in your paper your reporter quotes someone as saying, among other things, that Christian Science is intolerant towards other religions. This statement is not a true one. Christian Science differs from ordinarily accepted theology in its teaching that sin, disease, and death are unreal. This is not in accord with orthodox theological doctrines, yet Christian Science does not preach intolerance any more than did Christ Jesus, who said of Jairus' daughter, already pronounced dead, "The maid is not dead, but sleepeth." There certainly was a great difference of opinion between the people who claimed that the maid was dead and that of the Master, who resuscitated her and restored her to her parents, thus proving his statement to be true; but no one could rightly claim Jesus to be intolerant in the ordinary sense of the word. He did not, however, tolerate the claims of sin and disease, but destroyed them by the power of Spirit, God.
Many Christian Scientists were once members of other churches. They found in Christian Science a religion that healed and blessed them in many ways, giving to them a comfort and peace of mind and body that they had failed formerly to receive. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in her book entitled "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 111), "I love the orthodox church; and, in time, that church will love Christian Science."
I note the person referred to admits that Christian Science aided him physically. This is but an added proof of Mrs. Eddy's statement in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 449), "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing."
