In an article by a clergyman it was gratifying to read the admission that "Christian Science has made many people feel happier and better." Yet it earlier speaks of faith-healing and cures by suggestion, and adds, "but usually there has been no real cure." These two systems are in no way connected with Christian Science. The work of Christian Science is not confined to the healing of sickness, but includes the healing of sin. Disease can be permanently cured only by spiritually removing the cause, which is mental.
Christian Science is a profound influence for good, for by it fear, arrogance, pride, envy, hatred, give place to the divine nature, expressed in healthier, more wide-awake, useful lives. God, Spirit, is the great First Cause and creator, and man and the universe are the perfect spiritual effect. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 34) Mary Baker Eddy writes, "One who has been healed by Christian Science is not only healed of the disease, but is improved morally. The body is governed by mind; and mortal mind must be improved, before the body is renewed and harmonious,—since the physique is simply thought made manifest."
