Christian Science Organizations at Universities and Colleges
[Written Especially for Young People]
Many young people enter colleges and universities in order to continue what is frequently called "the higher education." Some of these are students of Christian Science, and still attend the Christian Science Sunday School. If they are at a college where there is a Christian Science Organization, as provided in Article XXIII, Section 8, of the Manual of The Mother Church, they will have the joyous opportunity of affiliating with this group, thus aligning themselves with the activity on their campus which stands for the highest education—spiritual enlightenment.
What a gracious opportunity this is! Yet some young students, even those who are members of a branch church or of The Mother Church, may neglect to avail themselves of it. What are a few of the mortal mind arguments which would keep college students from joining the organization? Here it might be well to ask ourselves what it is exactly that we wish to join. Are we looking primarily for social companionship? Do we expect the organization to be prominent in college politics, and should we be disappointed on finding it is not? Or, is our desire now and always to grow in the understanding of Christian Science, to serve our fellows faithfully and unselfishly, that the truth may be brought to those who are hungering for spiritual enlightenment.
We should remember the spiritual meaning of "Church," as "the structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle"—Church as defined by Mrs. Eddy on page 583 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Should we mistakenly look upon the college Christian Science Organization as only another material organization, we might accept mortal mind's argument: "Oh, there are so many organization and clubs to belong to, and I am just so busy with them that I have no time for the Christian Science Organization. I should really love to join it, but ..."
