Among the Churches

Pontiac, Michigan (First Church).—For First Church of Christ, Scientist, Pontiac, Michigan, its silver anniversary held a double meaning. Not only did it mark the completion of twenty-five years' service in this community, but it also was observed by the dedication, on Sunday, November 21, 1937, of its church building at Williams and West Lawrence Streets. Since Christian Science churches may not be dedicated until they are free from debt, this occasion caused much rejoicing on the part of church members and friends. Simple services in the morning and in the evening, differing only in minor details from the usual Sunday services, comprised the dedication ceremony.
Organized in the fall of 1912 by a group of persons who had received help and healing in Christian Science, the congregation first held services in the former Inch and Rambau Building. In less than a year increased growth forced the organization, then known as Christian Science Society of Pontiac, to look for larger quarters. More commodious rooms were arranged for in the old Masonic Building, which served as a church home for the next six years.
Soon after the next move was made to the Burlingham Building in the fall of 1919, it became apparent that a permanent church home should be established. The site at Williams and West Lawrence Streets was purchased in March, 1920. In the summer of the next year an opportunity was offered to purchase the home located on a large lot just east of the corner property. This home, originally said to have been build in 1837, seemed to present remodeling possibilities. Accordingly it was decided to purchase this additional property, remodel the original section of the home into a foyer, and build on a new auditorium.
