Our True Selfhood

In the third chapter of the first epistle of John are the words, "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God." God is the Father, and we, in our true selfhood, are His sons.

Christian Science throws great light on the Scriptures, both of the Old and the New Testament, bringing out the spiritual truth they contain. The passage just quoted becomes perfectly plain when we learn the truth about God and man as Christian Science reveals it. What is this spiritual truth? It is that God is Mind, and that man is Mind's idea—God's son. Then all men are, in their true selfhood, the ideas or sons of God.

God, Mind, is eternal. Mind's idea, man, must therefore be eternal. The relationship between God and man is thus indestructible. One of the most interesting truths revealed by Christian Science is that man has always coexisted with God, as idea with Mind, and that throughout all eternity man will continue to coexist with Him. As we grasp this truth we understand that our real selfhood is never for a moment apart from the source or Principle of all spiritual power, never for an instant deprived of divine protection.
