A local Member of Parliament, in your issue of December...

A local Member of Parliament, in your issue of December 11, is reported as implying that the Christian Science church has a different moral standard from the Christian church in general. Will you allow me to correct this false impression?

The Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount are foundational in the teaching of Christian Science. Throughout her writings Mrs. Eddy has held up this supreme standard for life and conduct, and urged it upon her students. In "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 129), she says, "Accept my counsel and teachings only as they include the spirit and the letter of the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, and the teachings and example of Christ Jesus."

Throughout the centuries, experience has proved the truth of the "wise man's" saying: "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." The fruits of Christian Science are best seen in the purified lives of those who accept its teachings and prove today that the standard set by the Master is not an impracticable and impossible one, but the only one by which health, happiness, and true prosperity can be obtained. Some of its results are indicated in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where Mrs. Eddy has written (p. 340): "'Thou shalt have no other gods before me.' (Exodus xx. 3.) The First Commandment is my favorite text. It demonstrates Christian Science." She continues, "The divine Principle of the First Commandment bases the Science of being, by which man demonstrates health, holiness, and life eternal. One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, 'Love thy neighbor as thyself;' annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry,—whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed."
