Eastern Daily Press

In today's Eastern Daily Press there appears a report of a meeting at which it was stated that faith is "a root principle of Christian Science," and that "it had had remarkable results." Whilst being grateful for the kindly recognition contained in these words, it is right for me to point out that healing in Christian Science is not accomplished through mere faith, but through a spiritual understanding of God and His laws, which when properly understood and applied does produce the "remarkable results" associated with it.

In the opening words of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy says (p. 1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." It is this understanding that enables Christian Scientists oftentimes to heal diseases which other systems have failed to cure. It is this which makes its healings scientific, lifting them above mere faith, because they are accomplished through the understanding of demonstrable and invariable law—God's law.
