For the past six years I have experienced much peace...
For the past six years I have experienced much peace and contentment, and I am happy to attribute this to the teachings of Christian Science as found in Science and Health, and other writings of Mary Baker Eddy. I have found that "the Bible is the learned man's masterpiece, the ignorant man's dictionary, the wise man's directory," as Mrs. Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 363). Although previously I had viewed Christian Science with favor, and, as I recall, had derived many benefits from occasional attendance at church services and in association with its followers, it was not until five years ago that I was ready to receive its teachings; not until the many things prized and humanly cherished had "become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal."
Twice the sanctuary of the home had been broken, and when this was about to occur again, I received a letter advising that I study Christian Science. My first steps to obtain information as to how and where to study proved to be a joyous occasion. Since then it has been shown me that the Christian Scientist has much to give, and gives it freely.
After the purchase of Science and Health I became a diligent student. In the Preface of this book we read (p. vii): "The time for thinkers has come. Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portal of humanity. Contentment with the past and the cold conventionality of materialism are crumbling away. Ignorance of God is no longer the stepping-stone to faith. The only guarantee of obedience is a right apprehension of Him whom to know aright is Life eternal." It was my business to know Him aright.
