From young girlhood I had an insistent and honest desire...

From young girlhood I had an insistent and honest desire to find the truth about God, and for several years I diligently sought it in many directions. After each vain attempt, I returned to God in prayer with a plea that I might be led to Him.

Fifteen years ago a new-found friend lent me her copy of our priceless textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. My thought was immediately arrested and thrilled with the first sentence in the Preface, so loved by Christian Scientists: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." After finishing the beautiful chapter on Prayer, this thought came to me: "If the rest of the book is like the first chapter, it is the answer to my prayer." Indeed, the truth was found, and rebirth and regeneration have resulted and are continuous.

At that time I was seeking peace of mind and happiness under great mental duress. Liberty seemed unattainable. From a material point of view, my circumstances were considered fortunate, in that I had a lovely home, dear ones, many friends, and much social activity. Social drinking and so forth seemed unavoidable. At the same time, however, there was in my heart a love of Christian Science and a fervent desire to live a purposeful, worth-while life. One day, I received a mental shock so severe that it rendered me insensible to everything but grief. In this extremity I learned Love's presence. It was as if the room were filled with a glorious light and a voice were speaking clearly to me, "You are entertaining an angel unawares." Thoughts of self-destruction fell away and a great peace was everywhere. Since that time almost my entire time and effort have been given to the study of the Bible together with Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings.
