The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA (joint lecture).

Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by Frank C. Ayers, who said:—

At a Christian Science lecture every beginning student is an honored guest, a stranger the most welcome person in the house. In preparing for the good to be received from the lecture let us realize that physical listening is not sufficient. We might hear every word, note each inflection, and still not gain that for which we came. Spiritual listening is required. God has given this faculty of spiritual listening to each one of us. When we prayerfully yearn to know God, spiritual truth unfolds in thought. For the next hour, then, let us put aside all our problems and listen. For Jesus said, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I [the Christ] in the midst of them."

ALTONA, GERMANY (First Church).

Lecturer: Richard J. Davis; introduced by Hermann Loepthien, who said:—

You are come to hear a lecture on Christian Science, in other words, on the Science of Christianity. Can such a lecture bring you anything new? No and yes. No, because Christianity, in its fullest expression, was proclaimed to the world nineteen hundred years ago by the greatest teacher of all times. Yes, because Christian Science restores to you what was lost of this teaching during the intervening centuries.

Christian Science brings about freedom by recognizing the law of Spirit, the law of God, good, as the only law, and by ascribing all power to God. It teaches and proves that recognition of and obedience to this divine law frees men from the self-generated law of sin, sickness, and death.

This has been proved to me in many instances through the truth revealed in Christian Science; and this evening I recall my first experience after attending a Christian Science lecture. It gave me in such an enlightening way the right concept of God as ever-present, omnipotent Love that I had no doubt that I too, in accordance with the rules of this teaching, could be free from a stubborn physical trouble, from which I had suffered severely for a year, despite medical treatment. Some days later I sought Christian Science treatment, received it, and was healed the next day. Strengthened by this experience, I turned thereafter in every emergency to the understanding of God and His creation newly won through Christian Science; and whenever I sought the guidance of the Most High with a sincere, honest heart, He revealed Himself to me as changeless Love.

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS (First Church).

Lecturer: Robert Stanley Ross; introduced by Miss Eunice E. Finch, who said:—

All of us are here because of some degree of interest in Christian Science. We all have in common the desire to know more about God. My interest in Christian Science was first aroused by the need to be healed of what medical science diagnosed as an incurable disease—an advanced stage of tuberculosis of the lungs. This healing came immediately, when I turned unreservedly to Christian Science. One of the greatest blessings that this Science has brought to the world is the ability to understand and love the Bible—to apply and make practicable its many beautiful promises. Christian Scientists love the Bible. They read and study it consistently.

Perhaps there is someone here tonight burdened with what may seem to be an insurmountable problem. It may be that of unemployment, lack, unhappiness, or illness. Listen carefully, friends, for our speaker has a message of great import for you.
