One who was reared to have faith in God rather than...
One who was reared to have faith in God rather than medicine is not thereby ensured success in demonstrating Christian Science, as is shown clearly by my own experience. It is claiming our heritage as sons and daughters of God, and the understanding obtained through diligent study and application of the truth as taught in Christian Science, that makes for progress in our journey Spiritward.
I had read a portion of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly daily for several years after graduation from high school; but being thrown entirely on my own resources, materially, and also having numerous family obligations, I encountered many apparently insurmountable obstacles which necessitated more than mere reading. But thanks to the purity of thought and diligence of our Leader, who has given us a practical religion whereby we may find a solution for every problem, these difficulties have been met through earnest study.
In 1925 I proved conclusively that gratitude opens the way for more blessings. It was at a Thanksgiving service in our local church. I had at that time a severely fractured wrist, sustained on the Tuesday preceding, and although as yet I was unable to grasp even a piece of paper in my right hand, I arose to offer praise to God. Erroneous thoughts of having little for which to be grateful were replaced with gratitude for relief from pain, and also for the ability to pursue the duties of the schoolroom the previous day without giving evidence to pupils and fellow teachers of this seeming handicap. With this overflowing sense of gratitude for the blessings, I concluded my brief talk, when I noticed that I had in the meantime shifted the Hymnal from the left to the right hand and was experiencing no discomfort whatever. At dinner I handled knife and fork quite well; on Monday I wrote a letter with no pain or aftereffects, and resumed schoolwork the following Tuesday.
