In February, 1928, the doctors told me that nothing could save my life but another major operation. This I refused to undergo, as I had already had two for the same trouble, and after each had been left in a more helpless condition. Expensive drugs were prescribed for me, but they failed to give me any relief. I was very near the shadow of death and felt I was leaving my loved ones.

At this juncture a friend, who is a Christian Scientist, told my daughter of this Science and its healing power, giving her the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, to read. After reading the chapter on Prayer she felt that this teaching would help me; therefore during the next few days she read several passages to me, finally entreating me to see a practitioner. I knew that the doctors could do no more for me, so I agreed.

A practitioner was called by telephone, and she requested that the ninety-first Psalm and the answer to the question, "What is man?" beginning on page 475 of Science and Health, should be read to me until she arrived. When she pointed out to me that we cannot serve God and mammon, and that I must be willing to give up all for the Christ, and listen to the truth about God, and man in His image and likeness, I decided to give up all drugs and medical aid and rely absolutely on Christian Science.
