Twin desks and twin high-backed chairs stood on the dais of the plain little church which had been hollowed out of an hotel in a London street.

A woman in a green gown stood at one desk. The other was empty. "The meeting is in your hands," said the woman, and remained motionless. A silence, pulsed by the rumble of traffic, fell on the congregation which filled the place, though it was not a Sunday night but a Wednesday night....
