Patriotism

In the world we hear constant exhortations to be patriotic. Organizations, books, and newspapers are constantly admonishing us according to their particular concept of patriotic duty.

Christian Science gives us the correct understanding of real patriotism by pointing out that patriotism is an appreciation and zealous promotion of the best achievements of the race. Proportionately as man is seen as the image and likeness of God will come the understanding that patriotism is not to be regarded as geographic or racial.

The nationalistic misconception of patriotism has helped to engender the jealousy, greed, hatred, and lust which have occasioned wars. Nationalism attempts to associate God's goodness with some certain race and location, while true internationalism enfolds all mankind in gratitude for God's universal goodness. Therefore patriotism in its highest sense is defending the ideal of man's innate goodness. It is having the spiritual understanding whereby to recognize Godlike qualities wherever found, and in whatever form they may assume.
