The Shepherd and the Sheep

There is in the consciousness of most of us a natural love for pastoral scenery. We love to think of the shepherd and his sheep; of the attention he gives them day and night, and of their obedience in following him and instinctively turning to him for protection. He leads them from pasture to pasture, to the watering places, and in the event of anything untoward happening he ministers to their need.

It is perhaps on this account that through the ages the twenty-third Psalm has been dear to Bible readers. How many thousands have turned to this Psalm in time of trouble and found in the simple illustrations comforting assurances of the loving Father's protection and constant care for all His dear children!

On one such occasion a little student of Christian Science, during a dark hour of suffering when everything seemed dreary, turned to her heavenly Father for help. Towards the end of a day during which no relief had come, she and her mother commenced to read this Psalm very carefully. As they proceeded a great light dawned upon their consciousness: they saw the relationship which exists between the shepherd and the sheep, for if there were no sheep there could be no shepherd. Applying this to divine Love and God's children, they saw that they could not possibly be separated from the Father's loving-kindness. Pure joy and healing love soon flooded the consciousness of this little student, and she was thus enabled mentally to "lie down in green pastures" and be led "beside the still waters" of quiet, peaceful thinking, and her healing was complete.
