Kindly permit the correction of a mistaken implication...

Philadelphia Tribune

Kindly permit the correction of a mistaken implication appearing in your issue of December 21 regarding the teachings of Christian Science, in the headlines of a report from Newark, wherein a physician states that the teachings of a certain cult are not different from Christian Science and not different from Coueism.

Now Christian Science is spiritual truth demonstrated as an understandable Science in overcoming all human ills; Coueism is based on belief only, and has no connection with spiritual understanding. Any teaching, therefore, that is not different in this respect from Coueism has no relationship whatsoever to Christian Science.

In her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 487), Mary Baker Eddy answers the question, "Who or what is it that believes?" partly as follows: "Matter cannot believe, and Mind understands. The body cannot believe. The believer and belief are one and are mortal." She adds: "Mere belief is blindness without Principle from which to explain the reason of its hope."
