As the years go by my gratitude to God for some understanding of Christian Science increases more and more.

In 1917 I was at the stage when I had lost faith in God as I then understood Him. I had taught in the Sunday school of an orthodox church since I was sixteen, and as I grew older I was keenly interested in church work; yet, when faced with sorrow and in great bodily suffering, I found no comfort from my religion.

After leaving a nursing home, which I had made arrangements to enter for an operation, as soon as there was a vacancy, I was divinely led to go to a Christian Science Reading Room, and to borrow a copy of the textbook. I obeyed this leading, not with the slightest hope of being physically healed, but through curiosity to know in what way this religion differed from mine, and with, perhaps, a faint hope of finding some help for my very disturbed state of thought. After reading earnestly for two weeks I felt that I must own this wonderful book, as I had found something I had missed all my life in my religion. I read and reread the chapter on Prayer, for here I learned of God, to whom I could pray. The Bible seemed a new book in the light of that chapter. During that first week I was healed of the smoking habit.
