To one who had made a failure of business and who had...
To one who had made a failure of business and who had lost his health, Christian Science has come as a great blessing, restoring both in abundance. I had come nearly all the way across the continent, either wandering aimlessly or seeking success in far fields, to a little Christian Science Reading Room in a coast city. Broken in spirit, and in dire extremity, I entered this Reading Room about three o'clock one afternoon. The librarian was kind, motherly, and seemed to understand my case thoroughly. She found me a comfortable seat at a table, and supplied me with the Bible and Science and Health, together with some Christian Science literature. I began to read, and before long became completely absorbed in the books. I soon began to feel and to realize the presence of a power which hitherto had been unknown to me, but which was at that very moment available. I was not aware of the passing of time until I was informed that the Reading Room closed at half past seven.
I had read continuously for four hours, and went out healed, rejoicing and praising God that I had found something for which I had been hungering for years. I walked to a small neighboring town the next day where I obtained employment and went to work within a few hours. That was many years ago, and I have never ceased to be grateful for Christian Science—for what it did for me on that day, and has done for me every day since. To me there is something grand and beautiful in the provision made for Christian Science Reading Rooms, where people may go and find comfort and the healing truth. I seldom enter or pass by one without recalling with reverent gratitude the happy afternoon that marked the turning point in my life.
I am grateful indeed for the life and work of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science and the Founder of this wonderful movement, with its varied activities. I am grateful for class instruction, for the opportunity to serve in a branch church, in the Sunday school, and to be able to help others.
