[From the New York Herald, Paris Edition, France]

A straw vote was taken by an American women's magazine to select the twelve most influential American women. This leads to a controversial, useless, but very fascinating speculation as to which have been the dozen women of all time to have rendered the greatest service or to have influenced the highest moral, intellectual, and artistic thought, of not their own time but ours. Thousands, of course, have contributed greatly in their own epochs, and many more have been the inspiration of great accomplishments. In a place so given to mammon as Monte Carlo, a discussion resulted in an illuminating choice, which I cite herewith:

Mary, mother of Christ [Jesus], because ... she stirs the imagination and inspires the devotional thought of all Christendom.
