Stand Fast!

Mrs. Eddy emphasizes Christ Jesus' words in her statement on page 367 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "A Christian Scientist occupies the place at this period of which Jesus spoke to his disciples, when he said: 'Ye are the salt of the earth.' 'Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.'" And she admonishes us, "Let us watch, work, and pray that this salt lose not its saltness, and that this light be not hid, but radiate and glow into noontide glory."

In these days, when human values are changing rapidly, the old order is passing, new ways and means and customs are being established, when so many are beset by fear, bewilderment, and apprehension, Christian Scientists need more than ever to stand firm, to retain the true perspective and balance, and to share with others the strength and courage which come from a better understanding of God. Many can bravely face adverse conditions for a time, but when the situation does not seem to clear readily, and week follows week without apparent improvement—then is the test of fidelity. Great numbers of people recognize that Christian Science enables its students to manifest hope, strength, courage, cheerfulness, and peace beyond what is generally expressed around them, and these people are looking to them—Christian Scientists—for help in renewing their own flagging courage and hope.

With clear spiritual understanding of the unreality of all the distress and difficulty that seems to be troubling mankind, Christian Scientists have a great work to perform. They need to be steadfast, to guard their thinking. In the Manual (Art. VIII, Sect. 6) Mrs. Eddy admonishes each church member "to defend himself daily against aggressive mental suggestion," from accepting as true the errors which argue loudly and persistently that mankind is suffering from lack and depression, from sin and sickness, from grief and disappointment.
