It is with a heart full of joy and gratitude that I should like to tell what Christian Science has done for me. For the last twenty-four years God has been my Physician. I have never taken medicine of any description during that time. When I first heard of Christian Science I was living in South Africa, suffering with a severe form of blood poisoning, and had scarcely slept for one week. During that time I was under medical treatment and was in a serious condition. A friend then lent me "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and for several hours I read the chapters on Prayer and Atonement. I then fell asleep and slept for some time, waking to find all fear and suffering had left me. At the same time I was healed of chronic rheumatism and throat trouble, which I had had from childhood, and acute neuralgic headaches. The healing was so complete that I have never had a return of any of these ailments.
Another haling I should like to tell of occurred a few years ago, when I broke one of my legs at the ankle. Complications set in, and the opinion of the surgeon at the time was that I could never walk properly again. At the end of a fortnight my relatives, who were not Christian Scientists, had an X-ray picture taken by a specialist. He said he had never seen a foot in such a perfect position after a similar break, as every piece of bone and muscle was in its ritht place. I have never limped, and am deeply grateful for this splendid demonstration and manifestation of the power of divine Love, which is always at hand. If we rely on God, He never fails us.
I have to express my deep gratitude for another more recent healing. I had suffered for some time from a varicose ulcer on one of my legs and, as complications had set in, it was thought necessary to have a diagnosis. The doctor urged me to go to a hospital at once for an operation, as he thought an amputation might be necessary. At first I would not agree; but my sister, who was not a Christian Scientist, was sent for, and she was so upset at the thought of my not going to a hospital that I consented to go. I knew that with the consciousness of God's presence and power, it did not matter where I went, for I was in His care, and nothing could hurt me. A specialist was asked to take charge of my case, and as soon as he saw the leg, he said at once that there was no need for an operation. I left the hospital within the fortnight. They all knew there that I was a Christian Scientist, and were very much impressed with my health and cheerfulness, and said they did not know why I was there, as I did not take any medicine or require material remedies.
