Gospel Advocate
In your issue of August 3 a writer undertakes to describe the Christian Science exhibit in the Hall of Religion at the Chicago World's Fair. His accompanying comments on Christian Science are mere expressions of opinion, evidently based on a complete misconception of the subject. One may, for example, be pardoned for wondering just why this critic should apply the epithet "insidious" to a teahing which peculiarly exemplifies not only the words, but the works, of the Founder of Christianity. If following the example and commands of Christ Jesus renders a religion "insidious," it would be interesting to learn just what qualities would make it orthodox. The asserted shortcomings of others never serve to justify one's own position. Every teaching must stand or fall on its own merits.
Everything else aside, the main purpose of this letter is to call attention to the statement concerning the inscription connected with the display of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" in the Chicago exhibit. In describing this, your observer uses the following words: "In a show case there is the textbook of Christian Scientists. There is also a copy of the King James Version. At the top of the show case is the statement, 'Our Two Bibles.' These are the King James Version and Mrs. Eddy's book." Permit me to state most kindly that this version of the inscription is incorrect. The wording as it is and as it has heretofore been reads: "Our Two Textbooks." Science and Health is precisely what it purports to be—a commentary on the Bible. No Christian Scientist would presume to refer to it in any sense as a Bible. That it includes an entirely satisfactory "key" to the Scriptures is proved by the fact that those who conscientiously study the Bible in the light of the teachings of this textbook have been able through the understanding thus gained to heal practically every form of sin and sickness, in accordance with the positive promises of Scripture.
