The condemnation of Christian Science by a bishop in...

Melbourne Herald

The condemnation of Christian Science by a bishop in the Herald as "a religious as well as a medical heresy," merely because its teachings have brought relief to suffering humanity through spiritual means instead of with material remedies, is unusual in these days of enlightenment. It should be stated here that Christian Science makes no apology because its teachings differ from those accepted by the bishop.

It is this very difference that makes Christian Science a demonstrable religion. In healing through spiritual law, Christian Scientists are following the commands of Christ Jesus, who not only healed the sick and raised the dead without recourse to material aid, but who also taught his disciples to prove their understanding of God through similar practical demonstrations.

For approximately three hundred years after the crucifixion, the Christian church healed the sick and raised the dead. Does the biship call the teachings of this early church "heresy"? Every forward step in the history of mankind, every overcoming of limitation, every effort to ignore matter and rely absolutely on God, who is "a very present help in trouble," has had to face stubborn, unreasoning resistance. Surely the refusal to acknowledge a power apart from God, in strict obedience to the First Commandment, cannot be termed "heresy."
