May I ask your brief indulgence in referring to a letter...

Times-Union

May I ask your brief indulgence in referring to a letter which appeared in the Times-Union of April 9 from a clergyman, commenting on my letter in your issue of April 2. The main objection in my previous letter was directed against the classification of Mary Baker Eddy by an imaginary group, which then supposes that there is no such thing as authoritative religion.

The reference made to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" was for the purpose of showing in Mrs. Eddy's own language that Christian Science is founded upon the works and words of Christ Jesus. All Christian will agree that religion thus founded reflects the nature of fundamental truth, and so exists by the authority of Principle, Truth, or God. It may be said in this connection that the Christian Science church was founded by Mary Baker Eddy at Boston, in the year 1879, as "a church designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Church Manual of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, p. 17).

I regret exceedingly if anything said in my previous letter carried a tone of offense, because I have a deep respect for the clergyman referred to and for the outstanding character of his work.
