About nine years ago, after being told by doctors at...
About nine years ago, after being told by doctors at home and abroad that a major operation would be the only way to obtain relief from almost constant weakness and suffering, it was decided that I should submit to one. From early childhood I had never been strong, and for years I had tried many medicines and other material aids, including a minor operation, in the hope of gaining strength and health, but without success. Shortly before the date was fixed for the operation, I met a friend who mentioned Christian Science to me, and assured me that it could help me. I recalled meeting previously some students of Christian Science, who had been healed, and had been made free and happy through its ministrations. I argued that if it had brought them so much happiness and good, it might also bring good to me, and that surely there could be no evil in it.
The following day I wrote to a practitioner, giving details and doctors' opinions. To my relief a joy she replied that she knew that Christian Science could help me in my great need, and that she was willing to give me absent treatment provided I took no drugs. It was easy for me to comply, for all the drugs I had tried had failed to give me relief. Then it was that hope began to take the place of fear and dread; and after the day the treatment was begun I began to feel better and to gain strength.
From that day to this Christian Science has been teaching me that God is the great Physician, who, in the words of the Scriptures, "healeth all thy diseases." I did not have the operation, and through the protecting power of divine Love the doctors' predictions have not come into my experience. I have not resorted to materia medica since. I can do such things as cycle and paly tennis, as occasion demands, happily and normally. Instead of wanting to die, I am joyful in being able to lead a life of activity and usefulness among my fellows. The Christ has indeed brought me out of the bondage of weakness and suffering, and besides has given me something which I would not exchange for anything the world could offer.
