Lessons from a Tree

As our consciousness becomes illuminated through the study of Christian Science, we may learn many wonderful lessons from nature. Christ Jesus made reference to "the fowls of the air" and "the lilies of the field" to illustrate God's provision and care for each idea of Mind.

One summer a large sycamore tree afforded a student of Christian Science much inspiration. It was observed that birds and squirrels made their nests in its luxuriant branches, and that children loved to play in its shade.

The student knew that this tree had not always been so large, so beautiful, so representative of strength and substantiality as it now was. There must have been years of growth and struggle to withstand storms and other untoward conditions. It nevertheless had pushed on and up. Sending its roots deep down into the soil and its head upward in the sunlight, it had surmounted difficulties and grown. What an inspiration it was even to the casual passer-by! Many commented on and rejoiced at its beauty, its symmetry, and its great hight. It gave to all shade and shelter. It had not waited until it was full grown to give, but through the years had given all it had of beauty and of protection.
