In 1904 a noted eye specialist, after a very thorough examination, told me that I was badly in need of eyeglasses, and that I should have been wearing them since childhood. As I was fond of out-of-door activities and felt that glasses would interfere with them, I asked if I could not get some to be worn only when reading or working. But I was told the glasses I needed should be worn "every waking hour for the next seventy years." That verdict was accepted until late in 1911, when I was told that through Christian Science I could be healed of the eye trouble. At that time Christian Science was to me merely a name. I had no faith in its healing power, and did not consider it a religion. However, in a conversation with a practitioner, and in one treatment following, my eyes were completely healed. The glasses were laid aside and sight was so completely restored that smallest type print is easily read.
In that first treatment I was also healed of all desire for alcoholic drinks and of the use of profane language; and in about three weeks all desire for tobacco left me, thus proving the truth of our Leader's statement on page 406 of Science and Health, "Sin and sickness are both healed by the same Principle." Like so many other young people, I had fallen into these habits in the belief that they brought enjoyment and happiness; but one hour lived in the consciousness of God's loving presence brought more joy and peace than all the years of worldliness.
Since that first healing, nearly twenty-three years ago, I have depended entirely on Christian Science, and have always found it effective in healing quickly the physical discords which have manifested themselves. Through Christian Science, I have enjoyed a constantly increasing degree of good health, which demonstrates that this Science not only heals but protects.
